Demystifying DAFs: How to Leverage Donor Advised Funds to Encourage Giving

Over the past few decades, DAFs have experienced a meteoric rise in the philanthropic sector, and for good reason. One of the more versatile vehicles available to funders, DAFs offer flexibility, ease, and immediate tax advantages. Through this session, you will gain a broad understanding of the importance and functionality of DAFs, apply your learnings to a case study, and get salient updates on the latest DAF legislation. 


Matthew Davis, CFP®
Founding Partner, Sherwood Financial Partners

Matthew co-founded Sherwood Financial Partners in 2019. He serves as the firm’s senior financial advisor, offering guidance to families, individuals, and non-profits on how to steward their resources and do good with their wealth. As part of its commitment to helping others, Sherwood Financial Partners gives 1% of its annual revenue to charity. Matthew’s career began in 2010 as a Research Analyst at Manchester Financial, where he quickly became Portfolio Manager and served on the investment committee. He then served as Senior Advisor at Cedarstone Advisors. Matthew graduated Summa Cum Laude from Abilene Christian University with a BBA in Financial Management. He earned his MBA from California Lutheran University. Matthew lives in Westlake Village and is a proud member of MOXI and the Santa Barbara Zoo, which he enjoys visiting with his wife and two daughters. 

Carly Pippin, MBA
Manager of Client Relations and Business Development, Sherwood Financial Partners

Carly joined Sherwood Financial Partners in 2024, after spending two decades working in and with the non-profit sector. She serves as Sherwood’s advisor on philanthropy, helping clients develop and execute personally fulfilling strategies for charitable giving. Carly’s career began at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museums of Asian Art in Washington, DC, where she founded a patron program for young professionals. She then led communications efforts at Measuring Success, a DC-based consulting firm that serves non-profits. Next, she returned to her hometown of LA, where she managed communications efforts at the Getty Foundation, a leading international funder of museums, art exhibitions, and art conservation. Carly graduated with a BA in Humanities and Art History from Pepperdine University and an MBA from Georgetown University.
